Nestled on the waterfront of Pyrmont in Sydney, The Revy stands as a landmark of Sydney’s maritime history. Once a naval warehouse, this heritage-listed building holds both state and local significance under the Local Environmental Plan (LEP). Acrow Constructions was entrusted with the sensitive renovation of a ground-floor apartment within this historic site—a project that demanded precision, respect for the building’s heritage, and the highest level of craftsmanship.
Preserving Heritage While Creating Modern Luxury
Working within the constraints of a heritage-listed site requires a deep understanding of both the building’s original construction and the regulatory requirements that govern any modifications. As a Class 2 renovation, this project had to meet strict compliance standards under NSW’s Design and Building Practitioners (DBP) Act, ensuring structural integrity and design excellence.
Acrow Constructions approached the renovation with a balance of respect for the past and a vision for the future. The project involved the complete transformation of the apartment’s interiors, including the installation of a new staircase, bespoke joinery, and architectural detailing that seamlessly integrated with the building’s historic fabric.
Architectural Precision and Craftsmanship
One of the standout elements of this renovation is the newly installed American oak staircase. The original timber staircase was carefully removed, making way for a modern feature staircase crafted from American oak. Supported by a single steel stringer and enclosed by glass balustrading, the staircase combines strength and elegance, creating a sculptural focal point within the apartment.
The kitchen was completely updated with custom joinery, featuring clean lines and a minimalist aesthetic that allows the quality of the materials to take centre stage. The cabinetry’s handle-less design and smooth matte finish reflect the attention to detail and commitment to precision that Acrow Constructions is known for. Integrated appliances and stone benchtops enhance both functionality and style, ensuring that the kitchen serves as a sophisticated and practical space.
Innovative Wine Display and Bookshelf
A striking feature of this renovation is the steel and glass wine display—a 3.0m x 4.8m high structure that elevates the apartment’s design. Precision-engineered steel framing supports glass panels, creating a contemporary showcase for the client’s wine collection. The display is accessed by a black powder-coated sliding ladder that glides effortlessly along a matching black powder-coated bookshelf, positioned adjacent to the wine rack. The cohesive detailing between the wine display and bookshelf reflects the project’s architectural consistency and thoughtful material palette.
Refined Kitchen Design
The kitchen was completely redesigned to reflect a contemporary yet timeless aesthetic. Custom joinery in a soft matte finish creates a seamless and elegant look, enhanced by integrated appliances and minimalist detailing. A large island bench, topped with premium stone, provides both a functional workspace and a central gathering point. The cabinetry’s handleless design reinforces the clean lines of the space, while subtle downlighting accentuates the depth and texture of the materials. Thoughtful placement of storage ensures that the kitchen remains as practical as it is stylish.
Modern Bathrooms with Timeless Appeal
The ground-floor bathroom and ensuite were also fully updated to reflect a refined, modern aesthetic. Large-format tiles, brushed metal tapware, and frameless glass shower screens create a sense of understated luxury. The careful selection of materials ensures that the bathrooms remain timeless while aligning with the apartment’s broader design language.
Collaborative Design and Seamless Execution
This project was a true collaboration between Acrow Constructions, the client’s architect, and interior designer. Every element, from the staircase to the wine display, was carefully considered to align with the architectural vision and the building’s heritage context. RSD’s ability to execute this vision with precision and care is a testament to their expertise in Class 2 renovations and their commitment to excellence.
Crafting a Legacy
Renovating a heritage-listed property requires more than technical expertise—it demands sensitivity to history and an eye for modern design. The Revy project reflects Acrow Constructions’ ability to balance these demands, delivering a finished result that honours the building’s past while embracing contemporary living. This Class 2 renovation stands as a showcase of vision and craftsmanship—an achievement that reflects RSD’s position as a leader in high-end residential construction.
